Happened to me too. Got alot of help from MoonUnit(I think it was) on GWOnline.net and it work now ^^
I wasn't able to change my gamme options without pc freezing aswell.. Might try that, to see if its the exactly same problem as mine.

Quick summary of what i did: Downloaded the newest DirectX and installed it, worked for a while, but after a few days it was back at the beginning. Then i was told to uninstall my drivers or something like that, and download the newest ATI Catalyst Driver(Might be different to you, if you dont have ATI). I installed the newest ATI Driver and DirectX after. Works now.

512mb RAM
Windows XP

There can be others but on a most connections you shouldn't have too many problems (dial-up is the exception to that one). Try to lower your graphics setttings when you get into the game to take some of the load off of the video card that should help. Another thing that can help is to have as much system ram as you can afford. More system ram can help out performance issues by giving windows the headroom to actualy run without using the paging file. For non-geeks the paging file is a small portion of your hard drive (amount of space used depends entirely on how much ram you have installed and how many programs are running) that windows sets aside to use when your main system ram becomes full. Some people call it the swap file also. By installing more system ram you give windows more space to use without resorting to the slower harddrive. If you look at the system requirements for Windows (all versions have their own requirements) you will see what the minimum ammount is. Windows XP recommends 512 megs if I m not mistaken but it is much happier with 1 gig or more.

Thx for the lesson but not all of us are computer noobs. I've already covered all those steps you've mentioned. 2 Gigs of ram. Watercooled system. I've covered my own ass already. (I've done alot of testing but I don't feel like listing everything again) You people keep mentioning heat as an issue. Hasn't that been mentioned already like many many times? Do I have to take out a phase change unit and drop the temps below 0 for you guys to finally agree with me? You people always neglect to mention "software conflicts" also freeze your pc. I can't state this enough. MY HARDWARE IS FINE. It's been fine for a long time and only within the last 2 days when we got our most recent updates that this freezing has occured. Again I have covered my own ass and retraced my steps to insure I did not perform anything prior to the update that would hinder my system unusable when I open GW to play.

That sounds pretty much like the same rant I gave support. After running me through hell and back, they resorted to the "overheat" issue. They'll find a way to blame it on your system.

I get the same thing. Difference is I can go weeks without it and then BOOM, I get it a few nighs in a row. Totally random. I also get weird sounds from the soundcard when it locks, which made me think it was the SC but I've tried everything (including a diff card) to no avail. I have noticed I don't get it if MSN is NOT running but this may just be coincedence. Something to watch out for.

Ok i am also having this problem with random freezes, sometimes can play for hours sometimes only minutes, and maybe, just maybe, i have a fix

First here's my specs (All drivers for Mobo, Gfx & SFX are lastest versions)

Athlon X2 4400 (Max Tmp 38c)
2Gb DDR400 Ram
GeForce 7800GS+ (Max Tmp 48c)
SB Audigiy FPS

These lockups have only been happening to me since the release of nightfall but what i have found so far is that when i uncheck the Use 3D Audio Hardware in the options the game never locks. Now maybe it's a coincidence but seems very strange, give it a go and see if it solves anyone elses problem.

Let me ask a question, you with the freezing problem can you change the GAMMA options in the game, or does it freeze aswell?

This just happened to me.

Ive had the game for 18 months, so im assuming it would be my crazy computer which always seem to complain about everything.

*kicks computer in rage*

Buuut... im happier to see others have the same issue, which could mean its someone Else's fault and not my computer's. =P

Anet Respond please

/beg

alot of people have been having random freezing problems.

and let me first state for me IT ISNT PC RELATED!!!

ive tried THREE different pcs, all well above specs.
-laptop:2.2 mobile 2 gig ram 7800 gtx video.

- o.c desktop:mobile amd 2500 at 250x11 which is roughly 2.8 gig. severly overclocked. 2 gigs ram, dual raptop 10ksata raid, ati 9800 pro. water cooling. temps are fine.

-2nd desktop:amd 3200 2.2, 2 gigs ram dual channel, seagate 80gig 7200 hd, nvidia 5600 fx, stock no o/c.

so far ive defragged, -imaged, reinstalled guildwars, contigged, reinstalled over 7 different video drivers, ran hijackthis, killed every program in background and tried ,virus scanned with 3 different programs, and ultimately reformatted and installed just windows and needed drivers.

connection. 8 meg down 356 up.
tried several different brand cable modems.
connect directly to modem with ethernet.
disabled firewall. "well it isnt now cause it isnt the problem."
called isp and no blocked ports/services.
went to www.dslreports.com and ran over 6 different speeds tests from around the globe. all equal or over what my stated speeds were.

THIS DIDNT START UNTIL I INSTALLED NIGHTFALL!. thought i should state that.

before nightfall i ran gw perfectly fine. 1920x1200 aax4 all settings max with vertical sync.
my fps wouldnt sway more then 2 fps in either direction.

now i get 2 step lag, take 2 steps, lag out or freeze. its happens randomly.

game resolution doesnt matter. settings dont matter. same thing happens, on all pcs ive tried.

support kept asking me the same questions and had me repeat the same things without getting anywhere.

so to yall. good luck!

To add to what Mega Mouse said, the "swap file" is also known as virtual memory. Some directions on what these setting should be and how to change them can be found here: http://help.plaync.com/cgi-bin/playn...&p _topview=1

I would also check your computer's CPU temperature. You may need to invest in getting a better heatsink & fan or other method of cooling your CPU. Games tend to use more processing power than many programs and will cause your processor to run hotter.

Finally, I'd check out your power supply. I had a problem with GW freezing up on me as well. After trying everything else, I swapped out my power supply and "Bingo!" problem solved.

i have been playing since release week (proph that is) and this has only been happening to me since the last few updates.i sorted my VM a long time ago,i do not have heat issues!.on the times i have got into the game the lag makes it unplayable anyway.imho i think the problem lies in the dat file now being over 4gig.and as i can't switch my system over it would appear to be the end of my time on GW,and as i mourn the passing of my my beloved chars i pray thanks to the lord for delivering upon me my 360 and saints row online.anybody else with problems still using fat32?.

FAT32 doesnt like files over 4GB, so it doesnt work very well with them. Im afraid youre going to have to shell out way too much money for XP, then buy a new hard drive to put it on(not that expensive these days). Just make a partition on new drive NT, and install XP on that, making sure you have a good bit of space left for the swap file, as downloading something always goes to that God-awful CD Burning folder before its available, its really inconvenient, but Ive seen no way of disabling it. I hate rebooting to 98 when I want to D/L straight to disk. The worst was spending 2 hours for a movie download, then, at the end, "OOPS! not enough space! Start over!" Just so you know.
